GENERAL INFORMATION
This hat is worked in the round using two stitch cables and slipped stitches. Whilst the pattern is written for the two-colour version, you can just as easily use a single colour, simply ignore the MC and CC instructions! The hat has a lot of stretch and will bounce back, due to the slipped sts in the pattern. If you want to modify the pattern to suit your desired fit, it’s a good idea to read all of the instructions on pages 2 and 3 before you begin. You can adjust both the circumference and brim to crown but bear in mind that adjustments will change yarn requirements.

For a two-colour hat: Choose two very contrasting yarns, light vs dark in the same colour or different colours works very well. Avoid using yarns that complement each other because they have colours in common.
For a single colour hat: a solid, mid to light tone, will give the best definition.

Needles and Notions
You can use DPNs or circular needles for this project, I recommend a circular needle 16 inches / 40 cm long.
The needles used are small to create a dense fabric as this is a very stretch stitch pattern.
3.5 mm (US 4) needles (main needles) or size required to obtain gauge in pattern after washing and drying flat.
3.0 mm or 3.25 mm (US 2½ or US 3) needle(s) or at least 0.25 mm smaller than your main needle, depending on how snug you like the brim.
Beginning of round stitch marker, 14, 16 or 18 pattern markers, depending on the size made.
Tapestry needle to sew in ends.

GAUGE
28 stitches x 35 rounds to 4 inches / 10 cm using 3.5 mm (US 4) in pattern, after washing and drying flat.
The number of stitches to 4 inches / 10 cm is large due to the slipped stitch nature of this pattern.

SIZE
Both the circumference and brim to crown can be modified.
The hat has plenty of stretch. Choose a hat with a circumference 4 inches / 10 cm smaller than your head.
Circumference:
Small: 17 inches / 42.5 cm
Medium: 19 inches / 47 cm
Large: 21 inches / 52.5 cm
Brim to Crown:
Small: 7½ inches / 19 cm
Medium: 8½ inches / 21 cm
Large: 9¾ inches / 24.5 cm
