Wavy
Wavy is a light and airy loose-fitting cowl or snood, perfect for Autumn or Spring when a little more warmth is needed around your neck and shoulders. It is knit in the round at a loose gauge, using the classic Old Shale pattern in 4ply/fingering and silk-mohair laceweight. It is designed to take advantage of the heat trapping properties of silk-mohair yarn, but you could use silk alpaca or other fluffy laceweight yarn. Wavy can be made to any size, limited only by your yarn quantities, and looks particularly good as a snood to warm your ears as well as your neck.
Yarn
Any 4ply/fingering yarn for the edge and body of the cowl and any silk mohair/alpaca laceweight for the contrasting stripes. The sample shown was knit in:
Yarn A: Debbie Bliss Fine Donegal; 4ply/fingering; 95% Merino wool, 5% cashmere; 379 m / 415 yds per 100 g / 3.53 oz; sample used approximately 48 g / 182 m / 199 yds in colour Winter Rose.
Yarn B: Debbie Bliss Angel; lace/2ply; 70% kid mohair, 30% silk; 210 m/ 230 yds per 25g / 0.88 oz; sample used approximately 7 g / 60 m / 66 yds in colour 15003 Grey.
Sizes
Wavy can be made to any circumference; the pattern gives instructions for three sizes: narrow (77 cm / 30 ¾”), medium (90 cm / 36”), and wide (103 cm / 41 ¼ “).
You can make Wavy in any length you want by repeating the 7-row pattern. The sizes here are for the ribbing and a number of vertical repeats of the pattern.
For a simple short cowl, 32 cm / 12 ¾”, 10 repeats.
For a medium height cowl, 46 cm / 18 ½”, 15 repeats.
For a snood, 59 cm / 23 ½”, 20 repeats.
Finished size of the pink and grey medium height narrow cowl: 46 cm / 18 ½” tall x 77 cm / 30 ¾” in circumference; 6 horizontal repeats, 15 vertical repeats.
This pattern has both charts and written instructions. It has been thoroughly professionally tech edited, but has not been test knit except by me. Full pattern support is available by email.
This pattern is available as a single pattern from the Granary Knits Payhip Store, and is also part of the Four Stashbusting Cowls collection.
