The colorwork motif on these socks is inspired by traditional Māori motifs. The Xs represent the stars in the night sky, while the chevrons represent the ocean waves. Wayfinders would use the stars to navigate the vast ocean seas.

This pattern is a great intro to basic sock knitting, as it features commonly used techniques such as Judy’s Magic Cast On, the Afterthought Heel, and grafting.
