The cables on these Well Rooted Mitts remind me of the forests found in many fantasy novels, with ancient, gnarled trees and creatures hiding in the shadows.

Knitted in the round, construction includes thumb gussets and 2x2 ribs. Instructions for left and right mitts are identical; with careful placement of cables to avoid a pattern jog at the beginning of the round.

Written instructions for general construction. The pattern includes both charts and written instructions for all cables and thumb gusset shaping.

To fit 16½(19:22¾)cm / 6½(7½:9)in hand circumference. Unstretched hand circumference is 14(17:21)cm / 5½(6¾:8¼)in; choose a size with 0–2½cm / 0–1in negative ease. Mitts are 19cm / 7½in long.

4 ply/fingering weight yarn, with approx 105 metres (115 yards) per 25g; 2 balls.
Design shown knitted in Jamieson’s ‘Shetland Spindrift’ (100% pure Shetland wool) in #259 Leprechaun.
