These ribbed fingerless mitts are knit in the round with a patterned cuff, designed to match the Welting Fantastic Cowl. The stitch pattern around the cuff is a scaled-down adaptation of Barbara Walker’s “Welting Fantastic,” which can be found in her Treasury of Knitting Patterns. The pattern is easily memorized, using just knits, purls, increases, and decreases to create waves of garter stitch. The ribbing around the palms and knuckles, meanwhile, ensures that the fabric hugs the hands and doesn’t become stretched out with wear. I used a springy, hand-dyed superwash merino wool yarn in a DK weight for a soft, easy-care garment with great stitch definition.

Finished size:

➯ Length: 6.75 inches
➯ Cuff circumference: 7 inches
➯ Hand circumference: 6.5 inches, unstretched
➯ Ribbing makes these mitts quite stretchy; one size fits most
