My older cousins visited from Virginia in 1965 and brought the original cast album of West Side Story with them. They were sophisticated, they wore lipstick and bras, and, to my five-year-old eyes, there were no more beautiful girls in the world. Some things never leave you, and the frisson of excitement I felt every time I lost myself in the photos on the album cover they left behind made me feel glamorous beyond my years. This skirt is my own personal homage to Anita - flirtation through the eyes of a child in Toledo, Ohio.
