~ This is the first pattern in the Lyonesse Collection. The other two are Boat Trip to Scilly and Hesperides. A full e-book with additional content will be available soon and will be free for everybody who has bought all three patterns already.~

Seamless even though it doesn’t seem so! A plain drapey stockinette fabric meets with a crisp geometric lace pattern and a bold hi-low hem. A casual sweater for a weekend in your favourite part of town.

Lyonesse is a mythical island in the Atlantic Ocean to the west of Cornwall. With my collection I want to pick up on the theme of “West” and play with different aspects of it.

Sizing / yarn requirements: See bottom picture for detailed sizing and yardage table.

The sweater is meant to be worn with at least 10 cm = 4 inches of positive ease around the bust. The pattern contains detailed advice for individual adjustments.

The sweater is shown in size S2 on a person with a 84 cm / 33” bust and a 90 cm / 35” hip.

Yarn advice:
The original sweater was knitted with Blacker Yarns Lyonesse DK (110 m / 119 yds per 50g) in colour “Onyx” and Lyonesse 4-ply (175 m / 190 yds per 50g) in colour “Ruby”.
For a nice drape in the main fabric and for crisp stitch definition in the lace pattern, use a smooth yarn with some weight to it. Wool blends with plant fibre, e.g. linen or cotton, are particularly recommended. Many 4-ply yarns, if held double, will yield a suitable DK gauge.

Needle advice:
The gauge given above is for the DK yarn and the larger needle size. For the 4-ply yarn the gauge is 25 stitches / 34 rows = 10 cm / 4’’ in lace pattern.
Use the needle sizes that give you the required gauge, most likely 4 mm / US #6 for the DK yarn and 3 mm / US #2 ½ for the 4-ply yarn.
The garment is partly worked flat and partly in the round. It is best to use a medium long circular needle (80 - 100 cm / 32 – 40’’) for both. At one point in the pattern you will need a second needle of the DK size.

Construction:
The lace panels are worked first, then stitches are picked up along the long edges for the main fabric. The upper front and back are worked flat together with the sleeves, with short row shaping for a neat fit. Then the sleeves are seamed with a three-needle bind-off, and the lower body is worked in the round towards the bottom. The curved hem is shaped with short rows.
Please note: The lower body can easily be lengthened, and you can decide this on the fly by trying the garment on. It is also easy to omit the hi-lo hem if you are not into this style. If you want to lengthen the body, you will need more yarn than listed for your size.
