Alaska Native culture is rich with tales of Raven and his tricky wit. I often use Alaskan motifs in my designs and am especially fond of ravens. Most of my motifs are worked using intarsia, but I designed this hat using Fair Isle to conceal the ravens’ presence within the woods rather than featuring them against a plain background. Design inspiration was found in Susan Anderson-Freed’s Colorwork Creations. Philosophical inspiration is from Edgar Allan Poe, who believed the raven represents prophecy and insight as well as loss and sorrow—all of which are most fitting for these times.
