Whippoorwill is a modest, yet elegant shawl whose contrasting lines of eyelets dance along its border like the unique song of the bird whose call lilts through the air of the midwestern woodland where I was raised. Its range of sizes, crescent shape, and wide wingspan allow for several different styles of wear.

Whippoorwill showcases best in two tones of your favorite semisolid sock yarn, but also works beautifully with handspun, gradient dyed, and low contrast hand dyed yarns. Pattern is written for three size options and is knit top down in one piece. It is simple enough for the advanced beginner and includes written and charted instructions as well as details to help you achieve the best possible results.

Sizes
Directions are written for SM with changes for MD & LG in parentheses as follows: SM (MD, LG).

Finished Measurements
Width: 52” (65”, 76”); 132 (165, 193) cm.
Center length: 13” (16”, 18”); 33 (40, 46) cm.

Materials
Yarn: Yardages listed are generous estimates. It’s always better to err on the side of too much yarn rather than to little. When in doubt, buy the extra skein for insurance. In fingering weight yarn you will need approximately 325 (575, 725) yards or 295 (520, 650) meters, with about 35% of the total yardage in CC if desired.

Needles: Circular needle in US size 6 (4mm) or size required to obtain gauge. A SM and MD shawl can be knit on a 36”. A 40” or longer needle is better for the LG.

Notions: 2 stitch marker and a darning needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge
Gauge is not critical for this shawl, but yardage and finished measurements will vary if your gauge does not match the recommendations. In stockinette stitch 24 sts & 32 rows = 4”.
