I used Malabrigo because I had it in my stash, but any worsted or Aran weight will do.

The pattern shows up fairly well even with variegated yarn, so a solid or self-striping yarn would probably look great.

I would say this is an easy intermediate pattern: just a little more complicated than plain knitting and purling.
