The early winter wind ripples through the bare tree branches like waves across an unruly sea. Thawed and refrozen mud forms ridges beneath the matted lawn, entertaining to walk on and press back down to level. Behind the bare forest limbs, the sky is a gradient from periwinkle to pastel pink. Moonrise was early evening and the waxing gibbous hangs bright white and irregular just above the treeline. A few stars and planets have appeared--winter’s fireflies--shimmering and dancing from a vast distance. This wilderness is a haven, an unruly sprawl of rolling hills spotted with no-till gardens, contentedly grazing animals, and undisturbed nature. It is not a step back in time, but it is a step into peace. It is a sanctuary, a place that protects simpler ways and shelters those in need of refuge.

Hat is worked seamlessly, in the round, from the bottom up. Pattern is both charted and written. Hat is modeled in first size with approximately 3”/7.5 cm of negative ease.

If you are knitting the next size and plan on swatching, be sure to purchase an extra skein for yardage. Block thoroughly to smooth out the points left by the crown decreases & bloom the fabric.
