In the German speaking Alpine regions, high up in the mountains, they are still used: old fashioned wooden window shutters, sometimes with a little ornament cut into the center of the panels. And up in the mountains, with no running water and hence no means to have a water closet, the outhouse traditionally had (and still has) a little heart cut into the door.

You can choose your toe; instructions are given for rounded toes and for anatomically correct toes.
There is a little heart on the instep, the simple ribbing of the instep symbolizing the wooden boards of window shutters.

This sock has an alternative heel construction, with the sole and the heel turn worked in rows before resuming the gusset/leg part in rounds. The intricate vertical heart pattern using Bavarian travelling stitches is on the heel and the leg.

The cuff incorporates the broad ribbing and a more narrow ribbing, and ends in an optional modified picot bind-off.
