Free pattern for a quick shawl in bulky yarn.

Wintering is a half-circular shawl with a lace border. Bulky yarn knitted up in garter stitch at a loose gauge gives the body of the shawl lightness while keeping you warm. The shawl is knit top-down, starting with the garter-stitch body. A contrast stripe frames the lace border. The lace recreates the shape of the Garden Angelica plant (Lat. Angelica archangelica). In autumn, the Angelica dries and turns brown but maintains its form through wind and frost.

The directions refer to a bulky yarn version of the shawl but include a few tips about modifying the pattern for different yarn weights.

You will need three colors (the pattern will refer to them as C1, C2, C3; see below).

yardage: very rough estimate
C1 – approx. 206 yds/ 188.4 m
C2 – approx. 22 yds/ 20 m
C3 – approx. 120 yds/ 110 m

Wintering is my first published pattern. I wrote it up from my project notes, trying to be clear and precise, but it is likely that you may find some mistakes. I’m happy to fix and update the pattern, so let me know when you notice something that needs correcting.
