The Winter’s Tale double-layered reversible hat will make a perfect addition to your winter wardrobe, and keep your head warm. It features a lace pattern while the rest of it is worked in a simple stockinette stitch. And this gentle lace panel on the stockinette stitch background makes it very elegant.
However, this is not double knitting as you might think. The hat consists of two identical pieces, both details are knitted in the round from the bottom up. You will start with the provisional cast-on that will allow you to knit in the opposite direction later. To do that, you can use a contrasting color or continue knitting with the same color.
The pattern includes both charts and row-by-row written instructions.
Sizing: To fit an adult head 56-58 cm 22-23″ in circumference.
Measurements: 26 cm 10 ¾″ long.
Recommended Yarn Weight: light fingering/fingering.
Total Yardage: approximately 100 g/480 m 460–530 yds.
If you’re ready to try a two-color hat, you will need about 50 grams of each color.
Recommended Needle Size: 2.0 mm US 0 or size needed to obtain the gauge.
Gauge: 32 stitches and 42 rows = 10 cm x 10 cm 4 inches in Stockinette Stitch, measured after wet blocking.
Please note that the gauge varies from knitter to knitter and strongly depends on your individual manner of knitting. Before you start, it is highly recommended to knit a swatch to determine your gauge. Go up or down in needle size or yarn weight until you are satisfied with the result.
Yarn used:
The samples shown have been worked with two strands of different weight yarn held together.
Combined Yarn: Color City™ Norka (Mink) Yarn (52% cashmere goat, 48% mink; 350 m 383 yds/50 g) mixed with Cobweb Yarn (100% merino wool; 1600 m 1750 yds/100 g).
Total yardage:

  1. Solid Color Hat: 80 g of Norka Yarn mixed with 20 g of the thin wool yarn, both yarns in Grey.
  2. Two-Color Hat: 40 g of Norka Yarn mixed with 10 g of the thin wool yarn, both yarns in Blue; and 40 g of Norka (Mink) Yarn mixed with 10 g of the thin wool yarn both yarns in Grey.

If you prefer another brand, be sure to test the gauge to make sure that an adjustment is not necessary as you substitute one yarn for another. Changing the yarn weight will change the size and appearance of the finished project as well as change the amount of yarn required.
