I’ve always loved this sort of interlocking cable stitch, ever since I was 6 years old and my mom knitted my dad a grey pullover vest with just this kind of cable up the front (picture a 1959 high school chemistry teacher with horned rimmed glasses). It was perfect on my dad’s vest, and I think it’s equally perfect travelling up a cute cap or beret.

The pattern includes instructions for both beret and cap. The cap is knitted in Nirvana (merino cashmere), the beret in Eden (merino) rose. I like the way the wishbones get smaller and smaller toward the center.

Finished Size 22” band circumference. Adjust needle size for a smaller or larger hat. Instructions for cap (with instructions for beret in parentheses)

Note: The model has a rather large and somewhat misshapen head : )
