This is a sturdy colorworked sweater made to keep a hiker warm even in the worst weather. The colorwork is very specific. Each pattern is taken directly from Native American symbols and has a very special meaning. Waterproof pockets are sewn in afterwards- including an I-pod pocket. This sweater is knit in the round and steeked, although instructions are included for knitting it without steeking required.

Pattern calls for:
Plymouth Galway Chunky (100% Pure Wool; 110g/123yds) 8(9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 17, 20)skeins 750(heathered green, MC), 2skeins 704(grey, CC2), 1 each of (black, CC3), 16(red, CC4) and 145(bright green, CC1).

Gauge is especially important on this sweater and regular stockinette is interspersed with Fair Isle patterning. To prevent tight bands around the sweater, different needle sizes are used.
19sts and 5rws = 4”/10cm in Fair Isle pattern with 5.25mm(US 9) needles.
19sts and 6rws = 4”/10cm in stockinette stitch with 5.0mm (US 8) needles
Be sure to have the same gauge with both needles on both patterns.
