My son played Yoshi’s Wooly World at a friend’s house and came home insisting he learn to crochet so he could make a Yoshi! Hey, I’m all about video games if they can light a fire under kids to learn fiber arts! He’s not advanced enough yet to make his own, but I decided he needed a Yoshi in the interim while he learns. This quick little softie is a perfect weekend project. It is for an advanced crocheter.

All st counts given at the end of the row do not include the slip stitch used to join the round or standard turning chains. These stitches will not be worked into on the following row, so they do not count. Also, all crocheting terms are US terminology.

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in the following approximate amounts:
Green (body color) - 55 yards/50 meters
White (belly color) - 25 yards/25 meters
Red (tongue and back bumps color) - 7 yards/7 meters
Orange (boot color) - 20 yards/20 meters
Yellow (boot sole color) - 7 yards/7 meters

Hook: Size US G/4.25 mm, or size needed to obtain gauge.

Gauge: 6 stitches and 6 rows = 1”/2.5 cm in single crochet. Note that this will make quite a firm fabric. That is what we want! That will give your softie the structure we’re after.

Notions: White felt, small (6 x 8 mm) oblong safety eyes or black felt, white thread, black thread (if using black felt), pins, sewing needle, stuffing, 1 pipe cleaner, and a large tapestry needle.

Techniques: Crocheting in the round and the Magic Loop.
