‘Y Ddraig’ (The Dragon) is a triangular knitted lace shawl, based around an elegantly sculpted Estonian stitch pattern for the main body, with a cabled openwork spine.

The design was intended to be a simple, unfussy way of showing off a nice DK yarn, so I used a geometric stitch pattern with plenty of stockinette. The stitch pattern has a bias to it, hence it generates a strongly sculptured, textural fabric that changes depending on how it’s blocked. The border evolves almost seamlessly from the main body, and the cabled openwork centre spine adds interest along with a striking heart-shaped interplay with the main stitch pattern.

It’s knitted on both sides, including purling through the back loops of stitches, hence not a mindlessly easy shawl. However, it’s not significantly challenging, the pattern is easy to remember, and is a fun and interesting knit. The pattern is charted only.

Requires two skeins of DK, or more if you want a larger shawl. Would probably work with a couple of skeins of 4-ply or a skein of laceweight, too! There’s a support and discussion thread here in the Triskelion Yarn group.

PLEASE NOTE: The ‘Knit’ line on the legend should read “RS: knit WS: purl” - i.e. stocking stitch, not garter.
