Lets face it: we all have a lot of left-over yarn and tiny balls we want to get rid of. Yli Hat is designed for those and got its beginning from my own needs to get more space for my yarn stash.
Even though Yli Hat is made of scrap yarn, it doesn’t look like that - it’s stylish and fashionable with fine details and easy to modify for your own taste.
I combined 3 different yarn brands: I didn’t have light base yarn enough for the whole hat, so for the inner fold I used another light color and made a thin contrast stripe to get a finished result. Inner fold is not shown when wearing the hat but it still looks cool, but here’s the tip: if you make a light color hat, use another light yarn also for the inner fold. Otherwise it can be shown through the fold when the hat is stretched in use.
For the ”body” of the hat before the crown decreases I added 3 different green stripes and thin light stripes to get length enough.
If you prefer unicolor hat, pattern works of course for that too.
And as always, stay in the gauge to get the best result.

MATERIALS

Yarns:
Main color A: 35 (40) 45 g of Sandnes Sunday (100 % merino wool – 235 m / 257 yds / 50 g), color almond (2511). Or any fingering weight yarn that has some twist.

Stripe color B: 15 (15) 15 g Gepard My Fine Wool (100 % merino wool – 233 m / 256 yds / 50 g), color greens (832 or 850). Or any fingering weight yarn that has some twist. (I used 2 colors: 1 stripe with darker green and 2 with brighter green.)

Thin stripe and inner fold color C: 15 (15) 15 g Filcolana Arwetta Classic (80 % merino wool, 20 % nylon – 210 m / 230 yds / 50 g), color natural white (101). Or any fingering weight yarn that has some twist. = Approx. 65 (70) 75 g of base yarn in total.

And as many meters mohair strands with the same color with your base yarn. = Approx. 35 (35) 40 g of silk mohair (approx. 70 % kid mohair, 30 % silk - 210 m / 230 yds / 25 g) in total.
(I used natural white mohair with the main color A and light stripe color C and 2 different greens with color B to work the fading stripe effect.)

The hat is worked with holding both yarns together.

Needles: 2.75 mm (US12) long circular needle for magic loop or 40 cm / 16” circular needle and DPNs.

Notions: 8 removable st markers (1 different for BOR), tapestry needle.

Gauge: 36 sts x 33 rnds = 10 cm / 4” of twisted ribbing without any stretching.
