Notes flow and dance in thin air. The musician plucks and plays the strings. The cello vibrates with deep and rich tones. Rhythm and melody let us embark on a jolly and glorious journey. Stitches are like notes; added one by one, they form a coherent, unique and beautiful whole. The Yulieo cowl is an ode to the recurring melody, rhythm and exploration.
Named after a word play with Julie-O, a cello music piece by Mark Hammer, and the yarn, Arroyo, Yulieo is an expedition full of discoveries. Worked sideways, the cowl combines lace with texture from asymmetric cables and slip stitches. Patterns alternate and create a rhythmic and entertaining flow. Yulieo is suited for improvisation and customization; wider, longer, all is possible. Get inspired and join us on this melodic and rhythmic journey!

For best effect, use a round yarn with good stitch definition. Yarn weights ranging from fingering to Worsted would be suitable. As for colorways, I would recommend solid, semi-solid, or gradient (single skein or gradient set) yarns.

Suggestions are given to work a scarf instead of a cowl.

Yarns
Malabrigo Arroyo (Sport; 100% Merino; 305 meters / 335 yards per 100 grams); 1 skein MC, 1 skein CC; sample uses 71 grams in color 096 Sunset (MC) and 35 grams in color 133 Reflecting Pool (CC).

Needles
3.25 mm (US size 3) 100 cm / 40 inches circular needle or size to obtain gauge.

Gauge
25 stitches and 35 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in Stockinette stitch, unblocked with MC.
19.5 stitches and 32.5 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in stitch pattern B – Pizzicato, blocked with MC and CC.
19.5 stitches and 24.5 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in stitch pattern C – Chords, blocked with MC.
19.5 stitches and 28.5 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in stitch pattern D – Melodic Improvisation, blocked with MC.
Note: obtaining the gauge given is not crucial but will affect the finished size and the yardage needed.

Notions
Removable stitch markers: 2 in color A (edge marker), 3 in color B (repeat marker). Waste yarn (or spare circular needle cable). Shorter cable (60 cm / 24 inches) for the working needle. Spare 3.25 mm (US size 3) needle for grafting (or three-needle BO). Tapestry needle. Blocking pins. Blocking wires (optional).

Size
One; easily customizable.

Final measurements
Circumference (c): 119 cm / 46.75 inches, height (h): 27 cm / 10.5 inches.

Skill level
Basic stitches, increases, single and double decreases, slip stitches, cable stitches, mock cable stitches. Relatively easy to memorize stitch pattern. Easy patterning on all rows. Lace and cable patterning on odd rows only. Working stripes. Provisional CO. Grafting (or three-needle BO).
Video tutorials are provided for the stitches and techniques used.

Pattern notes
This pattern is worked flat and sideways. The cowl is closed using a graft (or a three-needle BO). Suggestions are given to customize the pattern.
Charts and written instructions are provided as well as clear video tutorials for the used stitches and techniques.
