Using a linen stitch type pattern.
Cast on a multiple of 3 plus one. I like 34 or 31 depending on the thickness of the cotton. It makes a small dishcloth about 5 inches or so.
Purl first row
K3 slip wyib, then K2 slip wyib all the way across
On the way back it’s just like garter except you slip wyif on all the stitches that were slipped on the previous row.
On the next row you do the same thing except all the slipped stitches are offset by one. So K2 slip wyib, and then on the next right side row K1 slip wyib, and then back to the first right side row again.

Also, on the wrong side rows, slip the first stitch with yarn in back.
