Working a ¾-sized version with size 10/0 hexagon beads.

Summary

Total number of stitches: 54,080
Total number of rows (including spacer sections): 758
Average number of stitches per row: 71.35
Meterage (yardage): 700 m (760 yds)
Beads: 325 (327 for me)
Finished size: 183 cm (72”) long, 29 cm (11½“) wide

Someone might find these calculators helpful when adjusting the number of stitches:
How to increase evenly across a row and how to decrease evenly across a row.

Details

Day 1: CO 71 (76 for me), increase (I decreased) to 73 for lace section. (I will work future spacers over 71 sts.) — 24 rows.
Day 2: 69 sts. — 16 rows.
Day 3: 70 sts. — 34 rows.
(Working out to be 27 cm (10½“) relaxed.)
Day 4: 69 sts. — 18 rows.
Enjoying the knitting much more since switching to metal pins.
Day 5: 73 sts. My favourite pattern so far; fun to knit and lovely to look at. I worked a centred double decrease instead of the left-leaning one on the chart. — 20 rows.
18% of yarn used after Day 5 plus spacer.
Day 6: 73 sts. — 22 rows.
Day 7: 68 sts. I’m not doing that dropped stitch thing. I’ll do faggoting instead, so my stitch count will be 74 in total. — 20 rows.

This means altering the pattern’s stitch count to a multiple of 10 instead of 9, and working [yo, s1 k1 psso] in place of the last stitch in the repeat on the RS, and the first stitch of the repeat on the WS. Ignore charts A & C, start with rows 5 & 6 from chart B, work as many repeats of chart B as you like (I did 4 more), finish with rows 3 & 4 of chart B.

For anyone who wants to use this alternative to the original pattern here are the numbers:

  • For the full-sized scarf the stitch count for Day 7 will be 94. That is 6 edge stitches, 8 repeats of 10 stitches for the pattern, and 8 stitches to balance.
  • For the ¾-sized scarf that I’m doing it will be 74. That is 6 edge stitches, 6 repeats of 10 stitches, and 8 stitches to balance.
  • For the ½-sized scarf it will be 54. That is 6 edge stitches, 4 repeats of 10 stitches, and 8 stitches to balance.

Day 8: 71 sts. — 24 rows.
Day 9: 78 sts. I worked only one pattern repeat. — 20 rows.
Day 10: 77 sts. — 32 rows.
Somehow made a great big holey mess on one repeat. It took me ages to recreate the stitches after dropping them down off the needle, but I got there in the end. =)
Day 11: 74 sts. — 24 rows.
Day 12: 70 sts. Worked 1½ repeats (rows 1-16 followed by 3-9), then purled row 10 to balance the stocking stitch at the beginning. I also worked the second decrease on row 8 as p2togtbl to make it mirror the first. — 24 rows.
Day 13: 67 sts. — 24 rows.
Day 14: 73 sts. Love this! It’s really pretty and great fun to knit. =) The secret to easy k4togs and k4togs tbl is to work the stitches at the very tips of the needles. That’s why long tapers are the smart choice for knitting lace. I worked 5 repeats. — 20 rows
Day 15: 73 sts. — 24 rows.
Day 16: 74 sts. Mirroring the decreases on WS rows by working SSP for the first in the repeat, and P2tog for the second. — 24 rows.
Day 17: 67 sts. — 24 rows.
Day 18: 72 sts. Omitted rows 5 & 6 of the last repeat to balance the pattern vertically. — 22 rows.

The easiest way I found to work this cable stitch:

  • Slip the first stitch onto a locking stitch marker (or paper clip, or hair grip);
  • Slip the next four onto the cable needle;
  • Knit the next stitch from the left needle;
  • Hoik the stitch from the locking marker back onto the left needle;
  • Knit the four stitches from the cable needle;
  • Knit the last stitch from the left needle.

There are more steps to my method, but I found it was quicker for me to work. It also put less stress on the yarn which is a consideration when working tight cables.

Day 19: 71 sts. Again, I worked directional decreases on the WS. That is, SSP instead of the charted P2tog on rows 8, 10 & 12. — 24 rows.
Day 20: 67 sts. Worked as written. — 24 rows.
Day 21: 72 sts. All WS decreases worked as SSP so they lean the same way as the left-leaning decreases on the RS. All twisted stitches (k1 tbl) worked through the back legs (i.e., p1 tbl) on WS rows. — 28 rows.
Day 22: 71 sts. Worked 1½ repeats. — 18 rows.
Day 23: 68 sts. I do not like this day’s pattern, so I will work Day 14 of the 2010 Advent Scarf in its place. That’s 69 sts for me. — 24 rows.
Day 24: 71 sts. —24 rows.
(Worked my last spacer over 76 stitches to mirror the first one.)

I might see if I can get a better finished photo and some showing the patterns for Days 1 to 5. Mebbe….
