This is my second attempt at magic loop. The first (3 years ago?) ended up frogged in utter frustration. I probably shouldn’t have tried 2 at a time for my first go at the technique. This time I’ve had a few frustrating moments getting started, but now I’ve done a few rows I’m getting the hang of it. Might have to frog and start again if it looks too messy, but will decide after I’ve completed the ribbing.

This is also my first time using self-striping sock yarn, so I’m really looking forward to watching the stripes form :)

Tried on the sock after knitting an inch (much easier to do with magic loop!) and realised it is too loose for my liking. So I frogged and started again, which was surprisingly painless. Much easier to start the second time, and I’m really loving the technique now I’m used to it. I’m not getting ladders either :)

Am now using the smallest number of stitches the pattern lists (44), despite my needles and yarn being finer than those specified. I suppose I do have narrow feet…

Turning the heel going really well. I’m finding magic loop so much easier than dpns! It’s simpler to sit down with for some reason. Also easier to keep in my pocket when out and about, in case I get a random few minutes to knit (like at the post office the other day). Also much less likely to injure you if you accidentally sit on it :)

Sock one is complete! A couple of small errors written in the toe part of the pattern, but just referred to my usual sock knitting book to figure it out.* I have 12 g left from the ball, so I’m thinking of knitting a pair of socks for Gabriel. Can’t decide whether to knit one for him before starting the second of this pair…

I finished a pair of socks in the one month! That is a personal best, and all thanks to magicloop. The socks are really comfy, although I seem to have knitted the second one slightly longer. However, that’s a good thing as one of my feet is slightly larger than the other. I just have to remember which way round to wear them. Because the yarn is quite thick I can feel the texture of them under my feet which will take some getting used to. I suspect they will be best as winter socks, so I really should get going on knitting some fingering weight ones…

But first I think I will try a pair of toe-up ones for Gabriel with my leftover yarn. Matching mama and son socks!

  • There was no mistake. Just user error. I was reading the gusset decreases instead of the toe section. Oops!
