Notes

Okay, this wreath idea is so cute, and I think it’s a fun way to use these skeins of handspun yarn that are bright and cheerful but not colours I’m likely to wear. Both skeins of handspun are the same colours, but they’re spun differently. I’m holding the Drops Alpaca (from Peggy?) along with the lighter yarn so that they’re roughly equivalent in weight.

I’m actually really liking the purl side of this fabric, and the way it mixes the colours even more. Of course, the slipped stitches are on the knit side… but I could crochet or embroider some loops onto the other side (and leave the slipped stitches on the inside to do the structural work of the cinching).

Okay, yep, this is going purl side out, as I prefer the softer blending of the colours. The way the colours have worked up really reminds me of a Mick Aston sweater, so it’s a Time Team wreath in my head now.

Then I’ll embroider on the “slipped stitches” on the purl side — the real slipped stitches will be on the inside and they’ll do the structural work, but I like the look of them and I think they’re needed visually on the outside to explain the cinched effect. (Of course, they won’t be varied in colour like the real ones, but… enh.)

The knitting, grafting, stuffing, and embroidery are done! I am realizing that I probably should have stuffed this to a firmer state, if I’d had more poly-fil on hand. It’s probably going to sag over time if it’s hanging on a door. But I’ve got oodles of wire (left over from mask-making and other crafty endeavours) so I’ll probably make a wire framework for the back so there’s something more rigid to hang it from.

For the knitting: 361 yards total used, between the 3 yarns. (2 held together.) 104.8 yards of Bogge, 132.4 yards of Quagmire, 123.8 yards of the Drops Alpaca.

For the pom-poms: 198.8 yards total used. Used the remainder of the handspun: 184.2 yards of Bogge and 14.6 yards of Quagmire.

Altogether: 559.8 yards total used.

Note: One 6’ length of floral wire, threaded through the “slipped stitches” at the back of the wreath, went around the circumference twice, perfectly, giving the wreath the stability it needs. No more sagging! And it’s an easy way to hang it, too.
