June 21, 2015:

Well, HMPH. I did all those calculations, but neglected to notice that one of the first rows in the border chart has substantial increases that aren’t countered by matching decreases. D’oh! All those make-five-from-one stitches sure ate up the yarn. In the end, I had to adjust the edging substantially: after the rows with the make-five and make-three increases, I eliminated the rest rows entirely, and worked the patterned rows on every row instead of just every RS row. I JUST managed to eke out the leaves and establish the fluted shapes that fit between them, then work a stretchy bind-off (JSSBO was perfect here), with a whopping 1.9gr remaining. I think the effect works well enough, but I’m sad not to have the nice deep border as originally written! Not sad enough to rip back and eliminate one of the earlier repeats of the other chart, though.

Pre-blocking: spine 21.5”, wingspan 43”.
Post-blocking: spine 28”, wingspan 53”. (Will likely spring back a touch once off the pins!)

June 15, 2015:

HOORAY! I got this shawl back on track with minimal fuss, after all. I redid my calculations/weighing just to be sure, and yes, I should still get 5 full repeats (plus the called-for partial repeat) of the frosty chart. I had left off after 4 repeats; after a couple of days I’ve brought it up to nearly 5 repeats. I’d forgotten just how simple this chart is, so now that I’m on track, it’s really flying along.
___________

I developed eczema on my hands and couldn’t knit with the silk for the longest time. So sad. Now I don’t know where I am in the pattern!
___________

According to my calculations at row 90 (based on gauge and weight), I can do 5 repeats of the frosty chart before doing the dropped leaves chart. That should give me a 22-23” centre spine length, unblocked, if I’ve calculated right…
