Notes

I’m working the 6 month size, but in slightly heavier yarn and larger needles. For a pattern like this, which is all based on geometry, that should work out fine -- wouldn’t dare with a fitted garment, but the great thing about babies is that they’ll fit just about any sized garment, eventually.

I’m working the bodice on size 4 needles, but may go up to 5s or 6s for a more fluid skirt.

Right, so. That didn’t work. The size 4 needles I started with made for a dense fabric that gobbled up the yarn and didn’t drape at all, plus the dress was too big.

I ripped back, jumped up to size 6 needles, and tried again, casting on for the 3 month size. Much better fabric! But even following the 3-month directions, I was going to end up with a dress for a preschooler -- the bodice was huge, and I was still going to be short of yarn.

I ripped back again, partway this time, and added in a stripe of the Unicorn Tails (held double) in the bodice. I also actually got out a measuring tape and followed the schematic rather than the pattern -- meaning that I ended the bodice earlier than instructed, when the size matched instead of the number of ridges. (God I’m dumb sometimes. In my defence, I didn’t have a tape measure with me at the cottage where I knit the first two attempts.)

In the end, I used nearly every bit of the green yarn. I stopped increasing on the skirt of the dress after 3 increase rounds, and the skirt still flares, just by nature of the shape and the edging. It’s not quite as long as written, but I think it will work well regardless! I also think the blue will look really nice against denim, once the baby is large enough to wear the dress as a tunic, with jeans.
