Notes

I made a few modifications for size, as my sister’s BF has a giant 24” head. But of course, I didn’t write those down. Oops! They mostly involved adding extra stitches to the back of the hat, after the ridge that goes around the crown.

I also modified the front of hat instructions so that the shaping on the underside of the crown happens in the front, not the back. At least, I read the instructions as having the decreases in the back, but the pictures show it in the front, so maybe I missed something? Heh.

I have to say, the instructions are daunting… but each step does make sense as you work it. I found it useful to put the instructions into a table, with alternating shaded and white rows, so that I could glance at the pattern more easily.

Used 10-grid plastic canvas, cut on the diagonal, for the peak. I whip-stitched around the inner edge with a double thickness of yarn to make it nicer against the head. A second, smaller piece inserted in the upper layer of the peak holds it nicely in place.

I also used the leftover plastic canvas to block the hat -- I cut two more peak-shapes from the template, and used them in the front and back of the crown, to stretch out the oval nicely while blocking. Blocked it crown-side down, with the back of the hat loosely flopped over on top.
