New Brooklyn Tweed designs, new Signature needles from Christmas, and a day when work is cancelled due to a -41° wind chill? Sounds like a good day to start knitting a cozy hat.

Because this was yarn from DEEP in my stash, I had a limited quantity and couldn’t get more. The hat, as written, would have needed another 20-30 yards more than I had, so I had to rip back and rework the decrease section to start earlier. I eliminated 5 rounds, and ended up with literally only about 11” of yarn remaining.

Luckily, the crown of the original hat features quite a large swath of reverse stockinette, so I was able to just shift the decreases down to start earlier (at round 38) without having to mess with the cables at all. By shifting the decreases down an odd number of rounds, I ended up doing my decreases on alternating rounds with the cabling/faux-cable-lace rounds, which was actually kind of pleasant to work.

If you think you might run out of yarn, I’d recommend put a lifeline in after working round 36 (where the last sequence of cables is about to begin) so you have a nice clean place to frog back to.
