Sometimes, with a hat, it’s easier to knit the whole thing then to try and get your ideas across in a swatch. I knit this “swatch” and declared it perfect in every way. The only changes I had to make in the final pattern were to compensate for the change in gauge between the Elena and the Osprey yarns.
