Notes

Provisional cast-on for the first time. Decided to go with the Knitting Essentials tutorial because the one from Very Pink had me ending up with stitches that were mounted backwards. Couldn’t figure out what had gone wrong there.

Also, cast-on 56 stitches because I wanted an even 14 per DPN. Speaking of DPNs -- using my ChiaoGoo size 9 metals. I want a larger, looser (faster!) gauge, and I’ve decided to try it on DPNs this time instead of 16” circs. I’ve come to realize that it’s quicker and easier to move stitches on them than on the circs. Or at least I’m gonna try it out. Maybe I’ll end up converted (which would make me cringe a little bit, after all the money I’ve spent building my collection of 16” circs!!).

Am considering doing something creative with the stitch pattern, rather than duplicate 20-row repeats of the 3 colors I’ve chosen. I don’t know if I want to end up with the Jersey stripe of the original pattern or something a little more mixed. Going to get a couple of inches into it before I make that decision.

One of the significant drawbacks of knitting is that it’s so much more difficult to rip out and go back a few rows! I’m still not comfortable picking up live stitches -- the yarn splits, they mount wrong, it’s super easy to drop them… Anyway. Time to get started!

UPDATE 10/4: Row count pattern: 10, 3, 7, 5 -- repeat. Keeps it looking sufficiently random.

This project feels like it’s going so slowly, but in reality I just haven’t been working on it very much. I’ve got two other WIPs that are getting a lot more time than this one, my High Plains Drifter and the Moroccan throw.

And I love the ChiaoGoo DPNs. They are so smooth and sturdy to work with. But having to rearrange things every 14 stitches is making the work go a lot more slowly than on circs.

FINAL: Finished just in time for our first sub-50º overnight temps. Kitchener stitch to close. Not entirely perfect, but the FO is forgiving of my bejankety join and jogging color changes. It’s sooo nice and soft.

I have a little bit of yarn leftover -- not enough for mitts, I don’t think, but might be enough for a hat, so I think I’ll try that.

FEBRUARY 2015 UPDATE Sad news, I’m afraid. I got impatient laundering this and felted it ever so slightly. It just doesn’t have the same drape that it originally did and that I loved ever-so-much. It’s not really ruined, and I don’t think that anyone but me would even notice… But I do, and it’s not the same for me. I love the colors, though, and got a LOT of use out of it. Capra is an AMAZING yarn. Right up there with Mal Finito for softness around my neck. 10/10 would use again!
