Looking for a way to use the colours from my Seven Skeins kit, I decided to make socks. The patterns that came with the kit were lovely, it was just that most of the patterns (except for the slippers) were for items of which I already have stacks (mits and hats) or which I don’t wear/use (mittens and snug cowls). So, I needed a project for this lovely yarn and I needed socks (I always need socks). I picked 4 colours and used my ‘go-to’ toe up pattern (David’s) and took the gauge from my Buachaille Baffies (washed and worn many times) I came up with a 52 stitch width for the majority of the sock. The colours reminded me of Kate’s Blaithin pattern so I decided to add that around the top so that it would peek out over my ankle boots.
All came out well, just needed to expand the sock to 56 stitches for the colour work area to accommodate the 8 stitch repeat. They’re quite tall so they’ll be nice inside most of my winter boots or with clogs and stockings. I decided on a picot hem to finish the top and made the inside of the hem with 2.75 needles and in the Highland Coo to carry the russet colour up to the top of the sock. Between the colourwork and the tight gauge, they stay up with no need for ribbing.
