Notes

My gauge swatch (washed and dried, but just left to dry on a smooth surface - not pinned out): 26 st x 40 r. I liked the fabric I was getting, so I decided to just knit a larger size rather than try to get gauge on larger needles.

I ended up with it being about 35” after being washed and dried flat (no stretching or pinning). I would actually have preferred it about another inch bigger, but it works fine because of the open front.

Knit in pieces. Not only does that give it a bit more structure, but it allowed me the opportunity to adjust the size of the fronts if the back turned out differently than expected after being knit and blocked (fortunately, that wasn’t necessary).

Also, by knitting in pieces it’s easier to knit and carry around (with less wear on the already knitted parts). And there should be less pooling weirdness, since I didn’t go from a really wide section to small sections after dividing for the armholes.

I did not alternate strands of yarn from the different skeins, as they were a really close match. I knit the back piece with one skein, and each front with a separate skein. The sleeves were done with the yarn balls used for the fronts.

Rather than starting the sleeves with a provisional cast-on and working the sleeve cap upwards, then picking up the stitches and working the rest downwards, I just did the sleeves entirely top-down. I cast on the same number of stitches as the final bind-off, and worked the sleeve cap in reverse - casting-on stitches at each end instead of binding off, and increasing stitches at each end instead of decreasing. After getting 3 rows past the sleeve cap, I started working in the round for a few rounds, then stopped and seamed the sleeves in place. Then I continued working the sleeves down in the round.

Had about 74 grams of yarn left after making the body (other than the back neck trim, and the hem), which is half the total yardage from the 3 skeins of yarn.

I made the sleeves longer (10.5” before starting the garter stitch edging) and bound off with an Estonian lace bind-off. I did a regular bind-off first, but the cuffs felt a bit too tight.

I did a provisional cast-on when starting the body, in case I decided to make it longer, and also so I could decide at the end what kind of hem I wanted. I didn’t need to lengthen it, but I did do a few short rows to lengthen the back a bit. Then I knit a total of 7 rows of garter stitch using 3.5mm needles, and bound off normally using 4.0mm needles.

I had 64 grams of yarn left after knitting both sleeves to short-sleeve length, so I could definitely do a short-sleeved version with 2 skeins of yarn.

Had 34 grams of yarn left over after finishing.
