Notes

If you’re a chart knitter, be sure to read the written instructions very carefully. The charts, and the highlighted areas, are not quite what you may think, especially chart B.

The instructions in the overview are well-written, so it’s not that I didn’t understand what I needed to do - but the autopilot part of my brain wanted to treat the colored sections of the chart as a repeat. It was sort of like going to a foreign country and having to drive on the opposite side of the road from what you’re used to. Your conscious brain tells you to keep to the opposite side, but your subconscious wants you to drive on the side you’re used to, and takes over when you aren’t paying attention.

Line 17 of chart B is the killer. I read and understood the instructions, but I still had a hard time actually knitting it correctly. If you use the charts, you may want to switch to the written directions for that row to make sure you’re doing it correctly.

Fortunately, the lace pattern is simple enough that it’s easy to read your knitting and make sure that you haven’t gotten off-track somewhere.

I had nearly 1 1/2 skeins of the yarn on hand, so I did one extra repeat of the body. Even with that, I only ran out of the first skein of yarn on the bindoff.

I was on vacation and didn’t have a scale to check my yarn usage after chart A was done, but I know I used a little bit less of the yarn for the edging than for the body - so as long as you don’t go over half of your yarn for chart A, you should be fine. The bindoff takes a LOT of yarn.

I did the crochet bind off with doubled yarn, using a D/3-3.25mm aluminum crochet hook. For the last WS row of knitting, I used a US 6/4mm needle, then slid the stitches back on to the smaller needle before doing the bindoff.

Blocking was a PITA. The main body wants to be a triangle, but the border wants to be a crescent. Couldn’t use my blocking wires, and the loops on the edge required a huge number of pins. But of course, that’s what makes it so pretty.

The finished shawlette measures about 21” down the spine, and about 43” along the upper edge (following the curve).
