Notes

My gauge was off quite a bit - I got about 16 stitches by 20 rows pre-felting. I didn’t bother swatching - it’s just a bag. I wasn’t too worried about the size of it. (It ended up felting to exactly the pattern dimensions!)

Pre-felting dimensions of the bag: approx. 15” high. Width is difficult to judge, but as shown in the unfelted photo, it was about 15” across.

The bag itself, not including the straps, took 180 grams of yarn (a bit less than 2 skeins). If I’d used larger needles and gotten gauge, I would have needed more yarn, of course.

I did the double-stranding option for the first few rows, and followed the suggestion in the pattern to weave some extra yarn through the holes where the bottom increases were.

Nicely written pattern. The photos in the pattern were very helpful in understanding how to fold the fabric for the pleats.

Made an i-cord strap like bliedahl.

Did a 7-stitch i-cord swatch and felted it by hand… it shortened by about 28%. I made the straps 44” long hoping for them to be around 30-32”. As it turned out, the actual straps only shrank by about 20%.

Popped it in my top-loader with a couple of towels for around 10 minutes, checking every 2 minutes.

After felting and blocking: about 14.5” wide by 10.5” high when laid flat. The top band is about 10” across. The straps are about 35” long - a little longer than I wanted, but they’re fine. I’m happy with the size.

Still need to decide on a closure and lining, but it’s usable. Update: decided to use it as a knitting project bag, so I won’t bother with either.

I may make another one in a color more like the original (gold), and use leather straps. If I do, I may place some metal rings where the strap joins would be, so that I could add whatever kind of straps I want afterward.
