Finished, but still need to get pics with the sleeves!
Darn it - wasn’t paying enough attention to the pattern and did my 3-needle bind-off with the exposed seam to the inside instead of the outside. And that was one of the design features I really liked, too.
Used laceweight yarn held double.
The finished top weighs 214 grams, so I estimate using about 2376 yards. Without the sleeves, it weighed about 178 grams, (approximately 1976 yards).
Started with provisional cast-on above the ribbing, in case I want to modify the length.
Blue t-shirt shows the difference in size between the back of the top (without bottom ribbing) and one of my normal t-shirts.
Without the sleeves added, it looks cute as a t-shirt! Maybe I’ll make a sleeveless one some time. (Note to self if I do that - maybe make the sleeve opening just a little taller, with a few less shortrows for the shoulders to make the sleeves a little bigger. Underarms are fine.)
Modifications:
-
Made size XS instead of S for less ease. Casting on 4 fewer stitches as well for difference in gauge. Worked lengths and sleeves as for size S. Made sleeves longer - to 9.5” before the ribbing (10” after wet-blocking).
-
Made the neck opening a little narrower. I omitted the bindoffs of the last 3 sts for each neck edge on front and back. I’m glad I changed the neckline – the neck opening is still wide, but not so wide that straps show. It only ended up about half an inch narrower than the pattern specified. If I made it again, I’d probably narrow it even more.
-
Rolled hem at the bottom. Since I did a provisional cast-on, I purled one row, then 3 rows of stockinette and bound off. I tried the ribbing, but it didn’t really look all that great with my yarn. It would have looked better if I’d gone down a couple of needle sizes, but I decided the rolled hem would be fine. Plus, adding the ribbed hem would have made it longer, and I thought it was already long enough.

Waah! Managed to felt it beyond repair when I put it in the wash with some other hand knits. I’ve washed it the same way plenty of times before without a problem, so I don’t know what happened this time.
I loved the fabric produced from this yarn, but I probably won’t risk using it again for a top. What a shame, because I really liked this top.
