Notes

The shawl is a top-down, wide, curving triangle. The 2” ruffle is done in 1x1 rib, extending around the entire shawl.

The ruffle took approximately the same amount of yarn as the body of the shawl.

The photos with blue yarn show my swatch/prototype/proof-of-concept for a shawl inspired by Kate Middleton’s, showing a full-ruffle option and a partial-ruffle option.

Yarn: Knit Picks Gloss Fingering, in “Timber”, 6 skeins. I used about 5 1/3 skeins of yarn for the shawl, so there is plenty of yardage for swatching and allowing for differences in gauge. The ruffle will take about the same amount of yarn as the body of the shawl.

Gauge: Approximately 20 sts and 36 rows over 4” in chart pattern after blocking on US 4/3.5mm needles.

As a reference, my gauge in stockinette UNBLOCKED was 23 sts by 30 rows. The yarn “grows” and the stitch pattern relaxes a bit after washing, so for an accurate gauge, be sure to knit a good-sized swatch and wet-block it by soaking it, squeezing the water out, then patting it out on a smooth surface and letting it dry.

The body (without the ruffle) after blocking is 20″ down the spine, and about 62″ along the curved top edge. With the ruffle, it measures about 24″ by 66″.
