Can’t wait to start this project. I’ve been dying to try this stitch since I first found a similar pattern on etsy. Finally found the right yarn, so once I’ve finished up my current projects, I’m going to give this a go.
Update 7/1/2011
Finally got around to this project. I used an I hook and only one skein of yarn. Well, I actually squeaked out with a few inches of yarn left. Technically, I didn’t have enough yarn, but I decreased the amount of DC on each side of the scales to 4 on the second to last row. It was very close.
I didn’t follow the directions as closely this time around. I used a healthy dose of slip stitching to better shape the sides on the turnarounds.
Because of the larger hook, the scales came out larger and bulkier than the first neckwarmer did even though they’re both DK weight. I also don’t think the yarn is a good fit for this type of stitch. I prefer the baby yarn I used last time.
The yarn itself was much better to crochet with than I had anticipated. I thought it would split like crazy. The main issue with it is the slippery texture.
None of the silver buttons I have worked with the silver in the yarn, so I intended to use a black wooden toggle. I remembered I had these recycled buttons and decided to go bold with a teal button. Then I went totally rogue and used a muted purplish thread because I didn’t have any good thread colours in reserve and wanted to finish the project as quickly as possible.
Next time (because there will be a next time) I will increase the neckwarmer to five scales across and decrease the hook back to G.
