Pattern found on Etsy by gurumi’O’rama
My son loves the iPod game Sushi Cat and I knew I had to make this amigurumi set for him after I spotted it on Etsy.
Should have started earlier, but I think I can pull it off in time for his birthday.
Update 2/17/2011
Got most of the body finished. Now on to the appendages and embroidering.
Update
Since I missed the deadline, this project is in hibernation. Will finish before Christmas…
No, really.
Update 2/12/2012
Uh, not really…
It lives! My son started talking about how great it would be to have a stuffed animal Sushi Cat, so I thought it was high time to pull this project out of hibernation. Just in time for his birthday on the 21st.
I am almost finished with this project. Got the kitty puppet almost finished. Just need some blue felt. I have some lighter blue felt leftover from another project, but it turned out to be too light. Off to Michael’s I go.
I also discovered that my gauge was too tight and the cat body is too short. I’ve had to adjust the felt stripes to accommodate the shorter body.
The face embroidery was brutal. The one bad thing about working in continuous rounds is that making symmetrical facial features is nigh impossible. I tried the best I could, but couldn’t get the whiskers right. Even with all the problems, the face is cute.
I have also finished one cone sushi and one nigiri sushi, my signature avocado on gari (pickled ginger).
Update 4/9
Totally forgot about the stripes until a couple of days ago. I had attempted to pick up felt from multiple locations without any luck. I could not find any darkish blues. Finally remembered to pick up felt while at a Jo-Ann’s. Then I completely forgot about the stripes.
I wanted to get a few pictures of the completed project, so I didn’t want my son to play with Sushi Cat. After some (a lot) of complaining, I pulled out the felt and embroider floss and got to work. I already had the felt pattern made when after attempting to use the original light blue felt. I tried a couple of different ways to sew on the felt, but after a couple of false starts--not to mention, cutting out a second stripe after messing up the first--decided on small stitches near the edge. During this time, my son declared that the process was taking too long and he was bored. (=_=;)
After the stripes, I decided to make the onigiri as well. I never could get the sushi roll patterns to work out, so I figured I owed him the onigiri at least.
I’ll probably add some more sushi at some point in the future, but for now I’m calling it finished.
