Second photo is frogged vest.
This project does not like me.
I intended to make this vest for my little nephew, but the timing wasn’t right. When I was ready, I discovered I didn’t have the right needles. I looked everywhere but couldn’t find size 9 16” circulars. I had bought these interchangeable jobbies last year in a size 10 and decided close enough. (>=>).
After casting on the stated amount, I realized there wasn’t enough stitches to work in the round. I had picked up the size 12” plastic cord, but when I measured, discovered the total length with needles connected was 20”. So that was out.
Frustrated, I picked up the size 9 DPNs I had just purchased and restarted. It’s worked okay, but I keep dropping stitches off the end and dividing for the body was annoying because I had to keep switching the stitches around. I also ended up with more gaps around the armhole than I think I would have had if working with circular needles.
I’m at the point where I’m just knitting in the round, so most of the hassle should be behind me at this point. Hopefully.
Besides the hassle with my needles, the pattern itself has been clear and very easy. I like how the author says when to break the yarn because I have been confused by other patterns in this aspect.
I realized recently that when I first started this project, my nephew was one year old, but when I give this to him at Christmas he’ll be a few months shy of his second birthday. I hope it will fit. Guess I’ll have to make a second, larger toddler vest. (^~^)
I was dealing with a couple of broken yarn balls from other projects so I’m not positive how much yarn was used. I believe it was somewhere under two skeins.
Update 10/28/2012:
Do over!!
Couldn’t stand the messy collar ribbing, so I’ve ripped everything out and will start over soon…
Until then, this project is put on hibernation.
I now have a pair of 9” circulars so that should help matters.
Update 10/31/2012:
Back in business!
Cast on yesterday and have been quickly working my way through the pattern. Today I created armholes and divided for the body.
I cast on with a Size 10 needle, switched to Size 7 circulars, then changed to Size 9 circulars. I have to admit that using circulars is way easier than DPNs.
I’m much more happy with the look of the vest this time.
Update 11/2/2012
I can haz baby vest!
All finished, even all of the ends are woven in.
Had a heck of a time picking up stitches. Most of the online references showed picking up stitches along a different type of edge so I had to wing it. Eventually got it and I don’t think picking up stitches will be daunting anymore. Annoying, yes. Daunting, no.
Ended up trying three different times to pick up stitches on one arm hole. I seriously worried about the yarn fraying to nothing. Finally got it, but realized I didn’t like the ribbing with Size 9 needles.
Tried the other arm hole with Size 7 needles, waited until I finished the vest, then redid the first arm hole for the upteenth time with the smaller needles.
