Steven Universe. What even is Steven Universe? Beats me, but my friend Wudgie (that’s only her nickname, not her real name, don’t worry) loves it. She also loves the character Garnet, and asked me if I could make her a pair of gauntlets like Garnet wears. The request was made during PE in November, and her birthday falls on Christmas Day, so of course I made no mention of it ever again. This was done in order to throw her off the scent. I totally didn’t just forget the whole idea until the start of Christmas Break.
These gauntlets were really cool once I finished them, but they were so challenging to make. I mean, wide diagonal stripes in the round? Who does that? Cartoon Network obviously designs their characters’ wardrobes to be as hard to recreate as possible in order to have a monopoly on merchandise. After conquering the diagonal stripes (plus figuring out a thumb gusset), one has to knit the fingers in red and switch to black on the tips. That alone creates so many ends. THEN the little pink gems along the knuckles have to be improvised- they must be pointy enough to actually look like stones or else the whole thing looks like a cow’s udder. Lastly, a star must be knit and sewed onto the whole thing. Then the second one has to be done.
Oh, what we do for our friends! Wudgie loves the gauntlets, which makes this whole struggle entirely worth it. I also must add that I am extremely proud of myself for making them up.
