I used this video to learn the provisional cast on which worked well the first time. When I was ready I just grabbed a dpn and picked up the stitches and the waste yarn pulled right out. I then took another needle and slipped the stitches to it turning every 2nd stitch the right way.

After I finished the first quarter I put a stitch marker in the last stitch. That way if I messed up when working the next corner I could easy undo to the marker and not have to figure out which row was the last row. I always more that marker each time I finish a new corner.
