I added an extra stitch on each side of the graphed area to make a total of 17 stitches and I added two extra rows at the bottom and three extra rows at the top.

I made two pieces that were 17 stitches and 9 rows and single crocheted them to the heart piece with a small gap in the middle.

It makes a nice hot pot grabber. Now I have to make another one to match.
