This is a heavily modified version of this pattern, because I don’t read German. I made a valiant effort to decipher the pattern via a combination of a German knitting abbreviation website and Google Translate, but sadly I was undone by the construction itself, which I found completely impenetrable.

The hat is supposed to be worked from the bottom up, but for the life of me I could not figure out how to work the increases along with the burgeoning cables. After many, many false starts, I converted the design to top-down. Sort of. Which is to say, I cast-on and knit from the top down, and completely made up the pattern of increases with no reference to the pattern instructions, which I had given up on at that point, or indeed any other instructions that might have guided me toward a symmetrical crown.

Basically, I used the chart and ignored the text. Then I ignored the chart by placing the cables differently on the earflaps.

I was going to do two rows of garter stitch to finish the edge before binding off--I really wish I had done them--but I forgot and used two rows of single crochet to tidy everything up.

I made I-cord ties and then, at my sister’s request, finished them with pom poms.

Alas, I sent the thing off without thinking to measure it, so I can’t be sure of the circumference or height. I can only hope that it’s a good fit for her head.
