I knit this sweater in the round, using EPS. I started at the bottom, and put in a few short rows along the back before getting to the narrowest part of my waist so the sweater wouldn’t ride up. There is waist shaping as well and a few short rows at the shoulders. I started the button placket at the same time that I joined the sleeves and then started knitting back and forth. I used the seamless set-in sleeves from EZ’s Knitting Workshop.
I love Elizabeth Zimmermann!!! It was so fun to pick the design elements I wanted and incorporate them into my own sweater! Now I want to make a whole collection of sweater with similar yarns.
I knit to the joining of the sleeves and realized the sweater had a rather round shape. (See last two photos.) So i frogged to the waistband and started over using a key number that gave me 34” around.
After completion, I’ve decided to change a few things. I lined the pocket with a stiff cotton fabric so that it wouldn’t droop as much. It also doesn’t drape as much:( So I’m going to take out the lining. Also, i may have made the pocket a little too bulky. I knit the pocket several rows longer than the sweater before knitting them together.(Thinking that it would make the pocket more usable.) It led to a rather “chunky” look that I wasn’t exactly going for. (Chunky was not my description, but my fiancé’s. Unfortunately, this time I did agree with him.) I carefully snipped the top row of the pocket, took a few rows out, and then used some form of duplicate/kitchener stitch to sew them back together.
I also took out the last row of the collar and bound off using Jeny’s Suprisingly Stretchy Bind Off.
The buttons are from the Bargain Barrel at PeaceFleece.com. I love that place!
The name comes from my love of Madeline L’Engle books, especially the Wrinkle In Time series. They frequently mention the jackets and anoraks hanging by the back door for anyone to use. In the books, the pockets often hold useful items, long forgotten by a previous wearer. I love that idea.
