Knitting instructions
SIZE: Beret: One size fits all.
YARN: Patons Classic Merino Wool (3.5- oz/100-g/223-yd ball worsted-weight new wool): Beret: 1 ball Camel #77023 (A); a few yds Blush #233 (B). Scarf: 2 balls Camel (A), 1 each Blush (B) and Aran #202 (C). Knitting needles: Beret: 16” circular and set of 4 or 5 doublepointed needles (dp) size 6 (4 mm). Scarf: 29”–36” circular needle size 7 (4.5 mm), or sizes that give you the correct gauges.

GAUGE: In seed stitch: Beret: 20 sts and 32 rnds = 4”. Scarf: 18 sts and 36 rows = 4”.
SEED-STITCH PATTERN (on an even number of sts) Row or Rnd 1: (K 1, p 1) across. Row or Rnd 2: (P 1, k 1) across. Repeat Rows/Rnds 1 and 2 for pattern.
BERET: Starting at lower edge, with circular needle and B, cast on 100 sts. Join rnd, taking care not to twist sts. Mark beg of rnds with marker or circle of yarn on needle; slip marker each rnd. All rnds are worked from right side. Seed rib: Rnd 1: (K 1, p 1) around. Rnd 2: K around. Rnds 3–6: Repeat these 2 rnds once with A, then with B. Fasten off B. Working with A throughout, k 1 rnd. Inc rnd: (K 2, m1 inc made) around (150 sts). (Note: To work m1 make 1, insert left needle from front under top horizontal thread between needles; k through back of picked up thread.) Work in seed-stitch pattern, above, until hat measures 4” from beg. Dec Rnd 1:Work 27 seed sts, (sl 1, k 2 tog, psso–2 sts decreased); repeat from * around (140 sts). Next rnd: Work even in seed st. Dec Rnd 2: Work 25 seed sts, (sl 1, k 2 tog, psso); repeat from around (130 sts). Work as for last 2 rnds until 10 sts remain, working 2 less sts between decs on each dec rnd (work with dps when rnd gets too small for circular needle). Last rnd: (K 2 tog) around (5 sts). Stem: Slip sts onto one dp. Row 1: With right side of work facing you, slide sts to right end of needle ready to knit; pull yarn across back and k 5. Repeat this row until stem is about 1” long. Cut yarn leaving 6” end; with yarn sewing needle, thread end through sts from dp; gather tight; fasten off.
