Notes

Note about the tight garter edge:
There are two garter stitches for every 4 stockinette stitches in this shawl, which result in a very tight garter edge. I tried to knit it very loosely and got ugly elongated stitches which still weren’t loose enough.
My solution: Instead of “k2, kyok, work in pattern”, I do a “k2, turn, k2, turn, k2, kyok, work in pattern” on every row. This doubles the garter ridges per row and makes for a stretchy edge that also looks nice. The hole that’s created by turning the work and turning back again is barely noticeable, and is not bigger than the hole resulted by the kyok anyway.

The third photo shows the modified garter edging.

Note about the holes created by the pleat increases:
The “(k1, p1, k1) into the same stitch” double increase created a nasty hole which didn’t blend well IMO. I found myself staring at it too much and I hate when that happens. I tried another type of double increase which resulted in a smaller hole which I still didn’t like. After frogging the edging twice I finally settled for a simple “m1, k1, m1” instead of the double increase called for in the pattern. The result blends beautifully and is totally invisible.

The fourth photo shows the pleat increases.

This yarn was a bit outside my comfort zone. I normally hate variegated yarns and I’m not especially crazy about blue or purple. But this specific skein, which I got as a gift, was too pretty not to use immediately. I’m a bit surprised at how pretty it has knitted up in this pattern, and I’m in love with the final result!

I did 9.5 repeats of the body pattern (which still divides by 8 + 1, so no adjustments in the border were needed). I was nervous about not having enough yarn, but ended up with 25” of yarn left after CO (major phew!).
