I frogged this exact project long ago because the toe-up, short-row heel killed me. It didn’t fit right and I had so many holes at the short rows. Now doing it top-down, about 3 years later. Inspired by my friend, trenees.

03.06.12--Cast on 60 sts. K1,P1 ribbing for 15 rows. Knit top down, following jennnifer’s suggestions.

03.07.12--I’m so glad I have my Signature needles for slipping 5 sts at a time. Makes it go really fast. Yay!

Knit 9 repeats for the leg.

Heel:Slipped one st onto insole sts (31 sts). For the heel sts (29 sts), I sl 1, k1 across on RS rows and purled across for WS rows, for a total of 32 rows (16 slipped sts up the sides).

Heel turn:
Row 1: Sl 1, K 15 sts, ssk, k1, turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, P 5 sts, p2tog, p1, turn.
Kept adding until I had finished all of the heel sts, ending with a WS row & 17 sts.

Gusset:
Row 1: Knit across heel sts, picked up 16 slipped sts and an extra 1 st to close up the hole, knit in pattern across instep, picked up an extra st and picked up 16 slipped sts, Knit 8 sts from heel. Marked new beginning of row.
Row 2: Knit until 2 sts before gusset & instep join, ssk, knit across instep in pattern, k2tog, knit to end.
Row 3: Knit until instep, knit instep in pattern, knit to end.
Row 4: Knit until 2 sts before gusset & instep join, K2tog, knit across instep in pattern, ssk, knit to end.
Row 5: Repeat Row 3.

Repeated Rows 4 & 5 until there were 60 sts on needle (knit first decrease of row 4, but not 2nd one if necessary).

Decreases:
Shift sts so that there are 30 sts for inset & 30 sts for sole of foot.
Decrease Row: on instep--K1, ssk, k til last 3 sts, k2tog, K1; repeat for gusset.
Decrease on Rounds 1,4,7,10,12,14,16,17,18,19.
Graft sts together.
