The wallhanging picture from K’s dorm room is for color / design inspiration. It’s a quilt made for K by my mom and my sister as a high school graduation present. I have ordered the yarn from Knit Picks and I’m planning while waiting for it to arrive.

There are 6 colors in the circle part. I will probably do rouge and peacock for the centers, with peapod (green) as the next row out for all of them (like the flowers and leaves applique’d in wallhanging). I’ll do assorted non-green colors for the rest of the rows of the circles, then use the greens to square them off. If I can work it out on paper, I may try to make the big diamond shape in the background using the background greens.

I need to make two squares to decide if I am going to use the Knit Picks Brava or order some Vanessa’s Choice for this project. The Knit Picks was a lighter weight than I expected when it arrived and I’m worried this will feel like a baby blanket.

Finished the first two rounds of the 48 squares. I’m going with the Brava yarn which is lovely and soft (and otherwise, what would I do with it?) I wove in the ends for all of them -- I decided to be disciplined and weave the ends in as I go.

For borders, I’m loving puikkotiikeri’s choices which are six rows of granny clusters followed by scallops. That many border rows may make the blanket too big for a Twin XL bed, though.

Note: I’m not using the dublin dark green color -- it really clashed with the brights. I hope I have enough yarn, particularly the grass (dark green, which looks a lot darker IRL).

I’m about half-way done with round 3 on the 48 squares. (I’m doing 6 x 8). Waiting for the Marina color to come in stock from Knit Picks, so I’ll probably go on to round 4 on all but those last few before it gets here.

I decided I’m going to do the 7th row in alfalfa (the bright green). I’ll have to frog the outer few rows of the test square I’ve completed. I like the look on ElaineDiSanto’s block (her 7th row is white).

The grid picture is from this awesome website I found for helping with design called MyWebQuilter.

Fourth rows done on all 48 circles! The spring colors are really great for this time of year and a nice change from all those fall colors from the Tunisian Sampler.

05-14-2016

I’ve got 14 of the circles fully done (which leaves 34 more to do the last two rounds for). I’m getting close to running out of my first skein of yarn for some colors.

The 7th round is going to be all the lightest green (alfalfa). But then the 8th round (the trickiest because it needs to square off the circle) and the 9th will be made up of these combinations:

  • 16 solid dark green (grass)
  • 8 solid medium green (peapod)
  • 4 solid light green (alfalfa)
  • 20 half dark and half medium green

The 8th and 9th (final) rounds on each block will go on as I join them. I’m really not sure if it will be possible to change color in a corner and make it look nice. (See Crochet Spot’s blog post about changing color in a chain stitch.)

Progress update (there’s a picture that matches):

  • 2 squares done and joined (I wanted to see what the alfalfa 7th row would look like and play with the join-as-you-go technique).
  • 8 done to round 7
  • 8 done to round 6
  • 30 done to round 4

05-19-2016

Today I joined in four more squares to finish the top row, including figuring out how to make the two-color-on-the-diagonal background for the center two squares. I made a few mistakes before I got it right but I think it will look very nice!

I’ve got 21 more circles to finish, then I will lay them all out and get the color balance right, and label them carefully.

05-22-2016

All of the circles are done! (Picture added.)

05-24-2016

Finished the second row this morning (did the first three squares yesterday). It took me about 2 hours to do the last three rows on 3 squares doing join-as-you-go. Those two-tone squares are challenging (and leave 8 tails to weave in). Hopefully I’ll get faster!

07-02-2016

I finished the third row today. This project took a little break while I finished C’s C2C blanket (and made a few scarfs), but now it’s back to being my main focus. Hopefully I’ll get it done in time to send it back to college with K.

07-03-2016

Finished the fourth row. The main part is half way joined!

07-06-2016

And tonight I finished the fifth row. Thinking about the border. I’m going to start with grass (dark green) making sure I use Bunny Mummy’s technique to do a flat border, then I decided I am going to do rows of brights (some? all?) followed by light green “leaves” and light pink scallops, similar to Lucy’s edge.

07-11-2016

Sixth row joined tonight. Two more to go!

07-15-2016

Rows are done!! Let the bordering begin. grinning

07-17-2016

First three and 3/4 borders are on. I so love doing borders -- so zoomy and uninterrupted.

Border sequence:

Grass
Rouge
Peapod
Marina
Peacock
Mulberry
Freesia
Lady slipper
Alfalfa (two chain 5 rows)
Blush (shells)

All ten colors! So much for worrying about the blanket being too big. laughing

IT’S DONE!! So happy with how it came out!
