Notes

Alternative Ending for the stole (I publish these notes with the approval of Anne Hanson)

First there’s no grafting involved. You just go on knitting until you have reached repeat number 14 and then add the alternative end.
Second this ending leaves you with a lot of yarn to sew in. Just for you to be prepared…
Third, please read the notes carefully and make sure that you understand the principle before deciding to skip the grafting part. There won’t be a painless way to undo a wrong decision ^_^
Pictures Nr. 8 and 9 show how it’ll look in the end.

Here are my notes for the tall size stole:

When you reach the very last row (row 40) of your very last repeat (that’s probably repeat 14), you start with BO4 (as described in the original pattern) and go on binding off until you reach the first “big leaf pattern part”. You cut your yarn (so that you can sew it in afterwards).
That means that you’ve bound off the small leaf pattern including the faggoting stitches on both sides of it.
You need to start with a new yarn now. You go on knitting the big leaf pattern without the first yo and knit that row to the end (as described in the original pattern).

In the next row (row 1 of the original pattern) you start with BO4 and and go on binding off until you reach the first “big leaf pattern part”, then cut your yarn (see above). Now (with new yarn) you knit the big leaf pattern and bind off the small leaf pattern in between the two big ones. Cut your yarn. Start with new yarn the second big leaf pattern as described in the original pattern.
That leaves you with one big leaf pattern on one needle and another on the other needle.

You concentrate on one of the big leaf patterns and knit that to the end. Then do the other likewise.
Actually you knit the big leaf pattern exactly as it is written in the original pattern EXCEPT that you skip the yo’s that would start a new leaf on one side of the pattern. This way you’ll end up with 2 stitches less each row, because you go on k2tog and ssk in the central part, but you skip the yo’s. Go on like that until you only have 4 or 5 stitches on the needle. You can bind them off now. You shape the leaves you just made during blocking the shawl.

I know that sounds complicated, but it’s the best I can do (in a foreign language). Just ask if there’s something unclear. ^_^

Done!!! Without grafting and with alternative ending. It’s so pretty and soft and airy (109 grams)!
I needed about 650 rows. It’s 49 cm wide and 192 cm long. Perfect!

07/12/09 Still can’t knit. Haramis17 finished it for me, so that I can give it to the bride in time. I’m very grateful!!!

06/25/09 Can’t knit at the moment :( Have a very persistent tendosynovitis.

06/02/09 After a short pause I’m going on knitting now. Pinned the shawl roughly to get an idea how long it is: about one meter in length and I’m half through.
I must hurry a bit to get it done in time…

05/18/09 Almost half through. I won’t graft it this time but just knit it to the end. And then let’s see how I’ll finish it. Probably not in a straight line but with the leaf shape if I’m able to do that…
