Notes

I just stumbled upon this on the internet the other day. I have never done a knit along, so this should be a fun experience and a way to use some yarn from my stash. The first thing I had to do was wind the skeins into balls, a task made less easy by the fact that my ball winder is broken. I did use my homemade yarn swift so that nobody had to hold the skein for me but still - I need a new winder!

11 June 2013 - I made two sample swatches with my yarn from the test pattern given - one with number four needles (the recommended size) and one with number six. The look of the two swatches is not too different but I tend to prefer looser lace so I plan to use the larger needles for this project.

23 June 2013 - I finished the first clue in no time but I imagine that is to be expected if the same number of rows are posted each time since the shawl starts small and ends big. I miss the shawl I made that started big and ends small (that makes finishing more exciting since it goes faster with every row) but I can tell already that this will be a lovely shawl.

30 June 2013 - I finished the second clue but my circular needle is not long enough to display it nicely so I just took a decent picture of half of it pinned out to see the pattern and I will see if I have a longer cable to use when I start the next clue.

12 July 2013 - It took me longer than in previous weeks to finish the clue, partially because the shawl is getting bigger each week and partially because I have had a cold and was not feeling like knitting earlier this week.

23 July 2013 - Despite having received the fifth and last clue two days ago, I have not quite finished the fourth. I did finish my first skein of yarn just over one row from the end of the fourth clue. I have to wind my other skein into a ball before I can keep working.

25 July 2013 - I finally finished the fourth clue. Even on my longest (60”) circular needle only one half the shawl can be displayed. That is good, I suppose; given this shawl’s construction, it would have to be pretty small to be displayable at this point.

29 July 2013 - I finished clue 5 and bound off with plenty of yarn remaining. I used a #7 needle to bind off because I tend to do that too tightly, especially for lace which needs to be aggressively blocked. I do not know when I will get around to blocking it.

2 October 2013 - I finally got around to blocking this shawl. I still do not know to whom I will give it. Aggressively (if slightly crookedly) blocked, it measures 72” across the top and 34” from top to point.
